Visual Communication Panel

FILAH hosted a career panel last night, I along with a few post-grad friends,  who are also striving to make a living with what we enjoy doing, were invited to be the panelists. It wasn’t a huge crowd, but everyone was really enthusiastic – I had a terrific time.

Though, the theme was “Visual Communication”, which wasn’t exactly my field of work, I’m glad I was able to contribute my 2 cents on some of the general “business” type questions. By listening to  Nicki and Andrews’ answers towards some questions, it became obvious that having the right attitude is the foundation of great work and the core force to push through the obstacles regardless of which field you’re in.

Andrew, one of the panelists, from [Square Marden], a multimedia company that help discover and spread the name of upcoming YouTube Artists. And Jen, who hosted [Red Balloon] a few months back, came out to support!

“You start learning when you feel that you’re in lack of something.”
..and not when you’re forced to learn. And there’s no way to see what you’re in lack of until you go out there and start practicing whatever it is that interests you. James Cameron, the guy from Titanic, Alien, and Avatar, studied on his own time at the USC library about filming techniques when he tried to make his first film – an alternative ending for Star Wars. The alternative ending didn’t make it to the theater, but he sure learned a crap load from the making of it- much more than what it would’ve been if it were an assignment forced upon by his parents. I’m just saying.

[Nicki] was the other panelist. Aside from being of the members of Aggie TV, she’s also done hosting for shows, interviewed Far East Movement and Bruno Mars, and nailed a job so rare in the media fields – the company had to invent a new job title just for her.

↑The [Aggie TV] crew!

She strongly recommended “craigslist” as an outlet to put yourself out there!
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. And keep expanding your horizon – you never know when you’d hit the jackpot. Beatles took 7 years of non-stop playing around bars in hamburg before making to the U.S. Spike Lee had years of macaroni and cheese for meals before becoming a world renown director.
You just got to keep pushing and keep hustling.

↑ Rachel from [Aggie TV] and [Explorology]!

↑ Kenneth, known this guy since freshmen year. And Kaye, the president of FILAH. I’m sorry, this is the only picture I had of her.

Kenneth made the stickers look like they’re a million buck.

Sorry for the lack of photos – battery died. RIP.

But it’s alright, because passion’s what fuels us. word?

’til next time,
