It’s a design tournament. The idea behind Cut&Paste is to capture the niche of people that enjoy seeing LIVE design competitions. There are 3 different categories of the tournament: 2D design, 3D design, and Motion design. Each of which consists of 4 contestants. Given 15-20 minutes, each contestant has to come up with a design related the theme given slightly prior to the live competition. They do this annually across the States.
Sounds interesting? I came across this event just a few days before its SF stop, I had to give it a go.
Bart was my choice of transportation.
The event this year’s hosted at YBCA.
4 Contestants, 4 gigantic screens. We get to the every move the designers make from scratch to the final product. No pre-made images allowed, all graphics should be made ON THE SPOT. The designers brought their mouse, too. This is like a Star Craft 2 live competition for designers hipsters.
Against the walls, we have a shoe customization booth – the most unique shoe will be produced by Converse.
The place was very quickly filled – I’d say 300-400 attendees. Maybe. I was never good at estimation.
Kevin came with.
So did Paul and Kevin. A lot of our UCD peers swung by, too.
Ready to roll in just a few.
2D design: 15 minutes, the theme was “Vacation”. The contestants had to make postcards.
There are 2 heats. 2 designers from each heat will advance to the final round.
Devin, from Davis.
↑ The 2 advancing designs: That was a very intense 15 minutes. Congrats to Devin for advancing. Go Aggies.
↑ 2nd heat!
↑ So clever, unfortunately, this was its last round.
↑ Big screen action.
↑ Woot woot, the 2 advancing designs. Michael’s got it. Proudly reppin’ UCD!
↑ Though, just 15 minutes a round, the time flies. Little that I know, it was already 10ish.
3D round.
I had to leave before checking out the final round. Hope they did well.
I think I’m gana give it a try next year. See you soon enough, Cut and Paste!
