Franklin High Senior T Design Process

Cathy, from Elk Grove, invited me to come up with an idea for their school’s senior tee.
I really enjoy collaborating with schools. Remake/redesign their mascots to fit the senior class theme is challenging, but loads of fun. Plus, I get to add my personal touch to it.

Cathy gave me a clear background and guideline:
Class Color: Black
Class of: 2011
Mascot: Wildcats
School: Franklin High School
School colors: Black/Purple/Gray/White
With an attachment of their current logo and mascot.

Here we go:

The logo on the left was minimal. Cool design, but when it comes to tshirts, it might be too plain. It can be pulled off as a day-to-day general school uniform, but doesn’t have that “BAM” type feeling otherwise. On the right, it was very detailed design. Serious stuff.  I prefer designs to be a bit simpler.

After viewing their logos, I sketched out doodles and wrote down ideas on my own interpretation of this tee.

The concept:

Wildcat has its back facing us (musing type look) with its shadow stretched across the shirt spelling out class of 2011. It’s looking back to see how far it’s gone to become a senior.

Refining the details a bit. Fixed the proportion of the tiger and the shadow.

Then put it into illustrator and photoshop for further detailing and coloring.

In case the shadow’s too confusing, I added the signage on the top right. Slanted, with a perspective, so it fits better with the overall design.

There ya go. That was my take. BAM!
