Melly Lee | Identity Redesign

Met Melly just a couple months back through an interview with The Other Asians.  Aside from her art director position at OA, she’s also very talented freelance photographer on her spare time. But it doesn’t stop there, with a lot more things that’s going on, she wanted to redesign her logo into something simple and straight forward that can be implemented on various media.

The transition:

↑ She wanted to a new logo with full caps, allowing more rigid corners and lines to flow through the font type. I also cut out some elements from the previous logo to keep things simple and professional.

The process:

↑ Brainstorming is often the most time consuming stage. My approach was to jot down as many tolerable ideas as I could within the premise. Then reconsider and filter all the ideas by categories: Is it legible, is it simple enough, is it relevant..etc.

I ended up sketching out around 40 different concepts, then cutting down to 6 for digitization.

Yet, before presenting any of the candidates, I’d trim down once more by the logo’s potential for application and the overall balance. Usually I’d stick with 3 finalists:

↑ Melly preferred it to be clean and classy.

Once we have a winner, we move on to application:

↑ On invoice, contract, letterhead, business cards..etc.

That sums it up the birth of Melly’s new logo identity.

’til the next logo,
